World number three Jannik Sinner advanced to the semi-finals of the Miami Open in emphatic style on Wednesday, beating Czech Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2. Italian Sinner, who won his first Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open, will play in his fourth semi-final of the season after coming up against the lively Machac in 91 minutes. Sinner broke the Czech’s opening serve, but Machac responded immediately to make it 1-1. The crowd rose to their feet and appreciated the brilliant defensive play of Sinner, who eventually took control of the set, broke to take a 4-3 lead and then closed out.

The second set was easier: Sinner broke in the third game and never looked back.

Despite the comfortable margin of victory, Sinner said Machac deserved praise for his energetic and aggressive performance.

“He has an incredible talent. He is super fast, he is also in top physical shape,” said the number three in the world.

“I didn’t know exactly what to expect today. The first games I was a bit looking at what kind of tactics might or might not work,” he added.

“I played well, especially in the important moments of the game, which made it… on the scoreboard you see the score, but sometimes it lies. Today it was a bit like that,” Sinner said.

The 22-year-old will next face the winner of Wednesday’s other quarter-final between defending champion Daniil Medvedev and Chile’s Nicolas Jarry.
