The Gary, Indiana-born artist recalled creating the song with her late brother, saying, “Mike and I wrote that song in New York, in his apartment.”
Janet said she relives “that whole journey, listening to him sing it” and remembering “what he was going through at the time” as he sought to rebuild his reputation and career amid the damaging allegations.
“I’m her little sister, I’m always there for her and I’m her support system,” Janet said. “That’s always been my role.”
In the song, Michael addressed his frustrations with the fallout from the allegations and media coverage of the matter. The lyrics included: ‘I’m tired of the injustice, I’m tired of the machinations/ Your lies are disgusting/ So what does it mean, damn?’
In her 2022 Lifetime docuseries of the same name, Janet said of her late brother, “Mike was going through a lot and I think it was taking a toll on him.”
The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 after spending 17 weeks on the chart, earning the Best Music Video award at the 1996 Grammy Awards.
The black-and-white music video featured the famous siblings performing together, which Janet said in the docuseries was a complicated process as the music industry executives involved sought to keep them apart.

“I felt like they were trying to make things very competitive between the two of us. That really hurt me, because I felt like I was there to fight with him, not to fight against him.”
Janet said her sense of nostalgia for collaborating with her brother had not been enough during the production of the clip.
