The former Loose Women star and musician Eddie first met in 1980 – when she was only 17 – and dated for six months before breaking up and moving on with their lives.
About how they were men for the first time, Jane explained earlier: “We first met in the 1980s when I was a waitress at a nightclub in Wakefield.
Disco group, Liquid Gold played. The drummer, Wal, asked if we could have a drink. He was tall, blond and built like a god. It clicked and started to go out. ‘
The young couple broke up when Jane decided to embark on a career singing on cruises – a career in which she became a celebrity after appearing on the BBC show The Cruise – but reunited decades later.
Tribute to Ed, Loose Women’s official Twitter account shared: ‘Our deepest condolences go out to our friend and former Loose Woman Jane McDonald whose life partner Ed Rothe has passed away.

Henrik was working as a plumber engineer on a ship when the couple met, but he became Jane’s manager after they married in 1998.
In her 2019 autobiography entitled Riding The Waves: My Story, Jane touched on her and Henrik’s conversation about starting a family. She wrote: ‘Henrik and I once talked about having children, but there was no room for babies in his plans for me. I started to feel lonely in my marriage.
‘Your manager is your boss and tells you what to do, what to wear and who to be, so our relationship has changed. I loved him with all my heart but felt that he no longer considered me a woman. I became a product.
Finally, I came to the devastating conclusion that I really had nothing left. I said to Henrik, “I’m firing you as my manager.”
Jane previously claimed that Henrik had left their marriage to save her career, explaining to the Mirror, ‘Henrik went above and beyond and he was brilliant at what he did, but he didn’t know the industry.
‘We got to a point where Henrik had made quite a few enemies and he said,’ If I don’t leave you, you’ll never get a career. ‘
“And that’s why I never talk about Henrik in a bad light, because he was the one who got out of the marriage to save my career.”
After the couple broke up in 2002, Jane re-established her relationship with Eddie and became engaged to him in 2008, at Christmas.

Jane wrote about her engagement to Eddie in her autobiography, when she wrote: ‘Suddenly, Ed cleared his throat and reached into his pocket. “Jane, you’re definitely the one for me, and I should have done this 26 years ago,” he said. “Will you marry me?”
‘I was so overwhelmed that I started to cry. Then Ed started to cry! The people around us were hurt – thought we were going to break up. ‘
“No, no, he just proposed to me!” I said laughing through tears. ‘
She told the Daily Mirror of their revived romance: ‘My life was a big part of being in the right place at the right time, so being back with Eddie is something of a fate. We both realize that we are lucky to have found each other again.
‘I’m really having fun again. I am more confident than ever and I have a wonderful man who makes me laugh every day. ‘
Speaking about their engagement in 2011, Jane admitted, ‘This has to be the longest courtship and engagement in history. We first met when most of the people in this country weren’t even born yet!
‘Ed has been so patient. He’s fantastic, cute and we have such a great time together. We are not in a hurry to get married.
‘I love this one more than I ever loved the others and I don’t want to screw it up. In any case, I can’t afford to get a divorce again, ‘the star joked.
