Jamie told his 1.4 million Instagram followers, “So I finally decided to fix my knee and get a full knee replacement. When I was just 18 I had the entire meniscus removed from the inside of my right knee, putting it bone on bone and taking away the cushion that protects it. Since then it has given me constant problems.

‘While I was playing, I always had to go to physio. With the help of the incredible Kevin Lidlow it was a constant battle to control the swelling and pain but after at least 12 surgeries I decided to have it done.

“When I was 27 I was lucky enough to meet a wonderful surgeon, Richard Steadman. He managed to give me a few more years of my career before I had to retire from the game I love at 30.’

Jamie has previously spoken out about the knee problems he faced during his long football career, calling himself a ‘walking victim’.

He said: ‘It was hard when Jamie and Louise got divorced because both parents were married until they died, so we weren’t used to that.

“However, we have tried never to interfere and have all managed to remain friends. Everyone seems happy now.’
