Jamie Carragher urges Jurgen Klopp to ‘move on’ to another longtime Liverpool star this summer and strengthen in a key position as the Reds prepare to rebuild after a disappointing season

Jamie Carragher has urged Jurgen Klopp to allow a senior Liverpool star to leave the club this summer, and highlighted where the squad need to strengthen as the transfer window opens.
After several seasons of being the only team capable of challenging Man City’s domestic supremacy, Liverpool have failed to reach the heights they achieved under Klopp in 2022-23.
Despite closing the season with an eleven-game unbeaten streak, the Reds’ inconsistent form earlier in the campaign saw them miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time in seven years.
Klopp admitted in February that his side needed a rebuild, and the club have already taken the initiative, with Brighton World Cup-winning midfielder Alexis Mac Allister set to move to Anfield this summer.
A number of players who have been integral to the club’s success in recent years are also set to leave, with Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all set to leave at the end of their contracts.

Carragher stressed that the club needed defensive reinforcements, and switching to players nearing the final year of their contract with the club, such as Joel Matip, could help speed up the team’s defensive overhaul.
“I look at the defense and I think Joel Matip has a year ahead of him now.” Carragher said Red Men More.
“If you have £10m, whatever the price, it’s probably fair to move on.
“I think we need a left-footed defender, a left-footed centre-back. A lot of teams have that, we don’t. A left-sided player would add something.
“Rather than having a left-back because I don’t think we will, if we’re going to continue with this formation now, (it should be) buying someone in that area, a centre-back who can do the full-back role.

Carragher added that Joel Matip should be allowed to leave so the club can invest in a left centre-back.
“I’m definitely thinking of a left centre-back who can do that left-back job.”
Matip joined Liverpool in the summer of 2016, after seven seasons with Schalke where he was part of Ralf Rangnick’s side that reached the Champions League semi-finals and won the DFB-Pokal in 2011.
The former Cameroon international was plagued by injuries during Liverpool’s victorious Premier League campaign in 2019-20, but played an important role in the club’s Champions League triumph the previous season, assisting the winner of Divock Origi in the final.
