Jamie Carragher has responded to Ruben Amorim’s “bizarre” claims that his Man United team is “perhaps the worst in the club’s history”.

The Manchester United manager made the shocking admission after their 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, which left them 13th in the Premier League.

With six defeats in 12 in M16, this is the club’s worst start to a home season in 131 years and Amorim did not hide from an “unacceptable” start.

However, Carragher questioned the benefit of Amorim’s claims and insisted they could cause further problems for the United boss.

speaking in Sky Sports Monday Night FootballCarragher said: “I think it was one of the strangest and most ridiculous things I have ever heard a manager say.” Why would you make a comment like that?

“That’s the kind of comment an expert would make and I would have to defend it. I don’t know what he gains from that, what the benefit is. We all know it’s a poor Manchester United team.

“He just blew something up, a quote that will follow him for the rest of the season. He told the reporters who were there, ‘I’ve given you your headline.’ Why you would want to do that as a manager, I’ll never know.”

“I don’t have much sympathy for the players in the Manchester United dressing room, they have been a joke for a few years now.

‘A few weeks ago, after playing against Liverpool, there was an interview with Lisandro Martínez where he talked about mentality and touched his head.

“I almost laughed when I saw, to be honest, the number of times Manchester United have basically thrown in the towel with bad performances in the last four or five years.

“From the manager’s point of view, how can he go into the dressing room from now until the end of the season and continually strengthen them and give them faith, if he says they are one of the worst teams in Manchester United’s history?

“I would be very surprised if the powers that be above him didn’t have a strong word with him. You can’t talk like that as a Manchester United coach. “You don’t add gasoline to the fire.”

After the defeat against Brighton, Amorim told reporters: “We are perhaps the worst team in Manchester United’s history.

‘I say this because we have to recognize it and change it. Here you go: your headlines.

“It is unacceptable to lose so many games. For any Premier League club, can you imagine Manchester United?

‘The rivals are better than us in many details. I am only here to help my players, but we must understand that we are breaking all the bad records.

“In 10 Premier League games we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is like for a United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We get a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I am fully aware of it.’

Carragher then went on to say: ‘I don’t know why he said that. He had a smile on his face when he said. It was as if he knew the magnitude of his words. I don’t have time for this Manchester United team.

‘I’ve been watching them for four or five years with different coaches. I don’t know what he’s trying to do. Manchester United lost a home match against Brighton.

Amorim warned that the worst may be yet to come because he will not change his tactics.

“I knew it was going to be difficult to come up with a completely new idea right now, but when you lose games it becomes really difficult,” he added.

‘That’s why I tell you that we are going to suffer because I will continue doing the same thing. I’m not going to change, no matter what.’

After the defeat against Brighton, former Red Devils captain Rio Ferdinand highlighted three United stars who must be sold in January if the club is to improve their woeful start to the season.

The Red Devils are 13th in the standings after winning just seven of their 22 league games.

The players Ferdinand drew attention to on his Rio Presents podcast were Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia.

Speaking of the trio, the former England international said: “I think Antony is leaving, someone told me, Real Betis or something like that.” Just get ’em out, man!

‘Sorry, no, I’m just being honest. The more there are these kinds of guys, where there is a bad noise, everyone wants to leave, everyone is happy to leave, let’s just get them out. Let’s start again.

‘You know what it is, if there are people who are restless there and are not going to plan and are not happy, that spreads. “It’s like a bad, cancerous energy.”
