McClean’s Audi was towed from the scene and witnesses described a broken windshield and extensive damage to the car, which, as a result, may well have to be written off.

In a statement, North Wales Police said: “Shortly before 9am this morning (Wednesday 22 January), we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A534 at Wrexham, near the Wrexham Golf Club.

The incident was attended by officers and colleagues from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, who blocked the road until the vehicle was recovered shortly before 10am. “No serious injuries were reported at the scene.”

McClean will be in action on Thursday night in a top-flight League One clash against Birmingham City, who count NFL star Tom Brady among their ownership group.

Further tests will now be carried out to see if McClean, who is Wrexham’s captain, is fit for the match.

It comes in a week where McClean has been in the headlines after calling the English town of Shrewsbury a “cesspool full of inbreds”.

McClean has drawn the ire of a large section of his supporters for his refusal to wear a poppy around Remembrance Day, while he also refused to link arms with his team-mates during a minute’s silence last year.

He has made several attempts to try to explain the logic behind his reasoning, most recently saying: “People say I’m being disrespectful, but don’t ask why I choose not to use it.”

‘If the poppy was simply about the victims of the First and Second World Wars, I would use it without a problem. I would wear it every day of the year if that were the question, but it isn’t. It represents all the conflicts in which Britain has been involved. Because of the history of where I come from in Derry, I can’t wear something that represents that.”

As a result, he is often attacked by rival fans when playing for Wrexham in the English pyramid, and things seemed to boil over on Thursday during his team’s loss to Shrewsbury.

“To be fair, if I’d been born and raised in Shrewsbury I’d probably be this angry too because it’s an absolute cesspool full of inbreds,” he wrote on his Instagram Story.
