In an interview with Deadline, the actor said: “With California Schemin, I will tell a story about friendship, rap, and glorious failure that has the potential to move, shock, and entertain.”
The BBC documented the rise and fall of Silibil N’ Brains in its Storyville series in 2013.
James’ most recent project was the horror film Speak No Evil, which was released in September 2024.
While promoting the film, he revealed that he “may never see another movie with an audience again” after people “threw things at the screen.”

James played the lead role of Paddy, a family man with a dark secret, in Watkins’ English adaptation of the 2022 Danish film of the same name.
In an interview with Sky News, he explained: “I may never see another film with an audience again because it was wicked.”
“Every time I wanted them to laugh, they laughed, every time I wanted them to be surprised and scared, they were scared and then they surprised me with other things that happened.”
He continued: “People were throwing things at the screen at a time when my character was being particularly toxic, which was incredible, it was brilliant.
‘One of the things this movie is about is compliance and how obedient we become as a society and that’s potentially a big problem.
“We accept terrible behavior not only from people like Paddy but also from society, governments and the institutions that govern our lives.”
James admitted to drawing on a number of controversial influences when bringing the character to life, including influencer Andrew Tate.

In an interview with Deadline, James said: “With California Schemin, I will tell a story about friendship, rap, and glorious failure that has the potential to move, shock, and entertain.”
he said Empire: ‘What I thought might explode in the character is that he thinks he’s a bit… Andrew Tate from the West Country.
“He said, ‘I’m going to show you what it’s like to be a man again.'” But there’s a kind of polite face to him that’s not quite Andrew Tate, with just enough of a gleam of, “I’m not one of those guys.”
‘(Paddy) is challenging you, ‘Do you have a penis big enough to have a drink with me?’, or, ‘I’m sorry, this is too much for you because you’re not real enough.’ ‘
‘You wanted something a little agricultural. I had two big visual touchstones. The first was the Australian term bogan, which can be associated with a certain level of toxic masculinity.’
He added: “And the other was the character Rooster of Jerusalem, played so brilliantly by Mark Rylance.”
