Metallica lead vocalist James Hetfield says “rock is dead” but claims heavy metal will never die: “It’s something you have to fight for.”
Legendary heavy metal singer James Hetfield appeared on The Project on Tuesday night and said metal music will never die.
Metallica’s lead singer, 59, agreed with host Walid Ali who said he could understand the popular argument that “rock is dead,” but said heavy metal would live on.
The genre is an “underground” aesthetic, Hetfield insisted, which will always have its place in the music world.
“It’s inappropriate music.” It feels underground still. It’s like rebel music. “It’s something you have to fight for,” he said.
‘You know every decade, ‘Rock is dead.’ This is fuel for a hard rock band, for sure.

This comes just weeks after his Guinness World Record-winning band premiered to play the Power Trip heavy rock festival in California this October.
Metallica shares the bill with Australian rock band AC/DC, as well as other veteran rock bands Guns N’ Roses and Ozzy Osbourne.
The American heavy metal band, formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and James, released their 11th studio album 72 Seasons earlier this month.

This followed the release of the single Lux Æterna on November 28 last year when they announced the new album.
On January 19, Metallica released another single, “Screaming Suicide”.
Prior to the album’s release, they shared one more title track If Darkness Had a Son on March 1.
Finally, on March 30, they released the music video for the album’s title track 72 Seasons.
