James Gunn reveals he’s unveiled ‘less than half’ of his initial slate of DC superhero projects

It’s been just over a month since James Gunn unveiled his DC Studios slate, and it looks like there’s a lot more to reveal.

Gunn, 56, and his partner Peter Safran, 57, were announced as the new heads of DC Studios in late October, with Gunn promising to unveil his first batch of projects by February 1.

True to his word, on Jan. 31, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker revealed the first projects, including Superman: Legacy, Booster Gold, The Brave and the Bold, and more.

Gunn revealed 10 projects that will be part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), along with a sequel to The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, one of the studio’s Elseworld projects outside of the DCEU.

While no further projects have been announced since then, Gunn teased that many more are in the works when responding to a fan on Twitter.

As Gunn continues to chart the future of the DCEU, he’s also putting the finishing touches on his seemingly final Marvel Studios film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The filmmaker took to Twitter on Monday and shared an image of new villain High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji, adding, “I can’t wait for you all to meet this guy.”

One fan, @@Kr1s1s9302, replied, “How much of the Chapter 1 slate have you told us about?” Gunn replied, “Less than half.”

Chapter 1 of his slate – called Gods and Monsters – begins with Creature Commandos, an animated series already in production, and a live-action series Waller, which follows Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller.

The first movie in the list is Superman: Legacy, set to release on July 11, 2025, which Gunn wrote and will follow: “Superman balances his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

The next project is a TV series called Lanterns, which follows multiple Green Lantern characters said to be similar to True Detective.

Next up is a movie called The Authority, which follows an ensemble of superheroes using extreme methods.

The series Paradise Lost is set on the island of Themyscira, where the iconic hero Wonder Woman was born.

The next project is The Brave and the Bold, a new Batman movie starring Bruce Wayne’s son and supervillain Talia al-Ghul as Robin, which will not feature Robert Pattinson as Batman.

The TV series Booster Gold follows, as Safran explained, “a loser from the future who uses basic technology from the future to return to the present and impersonate a superhero,” as Gunn added, “superhero impostor syndrome.” .

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film project is said to feature a “much more hardcore” Supergirl than has been portrayed in the past.

The horror movie Swamp Thing takes a closer look at the creature’s origins and concludes the first part of Chapter 1.

Of course, Gunn gave no indication of what other projects would be part of Chapter 1, or when the other half of the list would be announced.

Gunn revealed that he collaborated with a group of writers to create this slate, including Drew Goddard (The Martian), Christina Hodson (The Flash), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), Christal Henry (Watchmen), and legendary DC Comics writer Tom King.

There are four more films from the previous regime at DC Films – which was eventually renamed the current DC Studios – run by Walter Hamada.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be the first of these projects and will hit theaters March 17, with The Flash starring Ezra Miller on June 16, with Gunn calling The Flash, “probably one of the best superhero movies ever made.” made’.

Also scheduled for release this year is Blue Beetle on August 18 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on Christmas Day.
