James Corden and Ruth Jones have revealed the big reason why Gavin and Stacey could never return for more episodes.
Actors Smithy and Nessa spoke as part of the documentary A Fond Farewell which aired on Wednesday night after the Christmas Day finale special.
Viewers had been waiting for five years to find out the fate of the BBC sitcom’s beloved characters and to see if Smithy had accepted Nessa’s proposal.
And the couple finally reunited at the end of the episode, leaving fans delighted, but their union is the reason there will be no more show.
Speaking about the documentary, James said: “Probably from the first Christmas special we did, when Dave proposes and Smithy says, ‘Don’t marry him’, from that moment on I felt like they had to end up together.
“And that’s what he says in this last scene: ‘I know it’s messy and not perfect, but that’s because we’re messy and not perfect.'”

Just a week after the final episode of Gavin and Stacey hit screens, fans were given the chance to say a final goodbye to the comedy with the BBC documentary.
And just minutes into the hour-long show, fans were quick to confess they were already “in tears” as they struggled to come to terms with the fact that the legendary sitcom would no longer be on screen.
The documentary offered a look at the making of the long-awaited finale, as well as a look back at the show’s origins and its 17-year run.
And when the special began, some fans admitted they were “already a mess” within the first few minutes.

The series, which debuted in 2007 after being created by stars James Corden and Ruth Jones, concluded with on-again, off-again lovers Smithy and Nessa finally declaring their love for each other and getting married, but not without a few hiccups along the way.
Smithy was originally set to marry his girlfriend Sonia, and it was revealed that he had never given a response to Nessa’s proposal, providing the cliffhanger for the show’s 2019 Christmas special.
But after the entire Shipman/West clan finally declared that he was making a mistake, Smithy finally declared his love for Nessa and proposed to her in an emotional scene on the Southampton docks.
The episode then cuts to Smithy and Nessa finally exchanging their vows in an intimate ceremony in Barry.

Despite ruling out a return to the series, James has said he wants to work with Rith again.
He said: “We don’t know if we have another idea in us, but I can honestly say that if we didn’t try and even explore the idea of writing together, then I would be very disappointed.”
