Jamelia will join the cast of Hollyoaks in a special Black To Front episode of the Channel 4 show.

The singer, 40, will appear as a character named Sharon Bailey, after appearing on the program as herself in 2003.

Sharon is a friend of Martine Deveraux, played by Kelle Bryan, and the daughter of a new character named Pearl, who is played by Dawn Hope.

Written by Hollyoaks’ core team writer Thabo Mhlatshwa, the episode centers around the Deveraux clan as they come together to celebrate the birthday of Walter, played by Trevor A Toussaint.

Sharon and her mother will attend Walter’s waterfront celebrations, which will be the main focus of the one-hour special.

The character of Jamelia helps Martine bring her parents together and she confides in her about her ongoing battle with cancer.

The singer had a great time filming, as said of her new role: ‘Filming Hollyoaks was the most amazing experience’

“I’ve felt like I was close to family, I felt so comfortable and so happy. It was just great. I can’t believe this has to be work.’

“So often black people are portrayed in a monolithic way, and I think an episode like this is very important to show the diversity within black personality.

The special episode will air on Friday, September 10 on Channel 4 and Thursday, September 9 on E4.

The one-off plays a central role in the broadcaster’s Black to Front diversity day, which will put black talent in the spotlight.
