Oakland University upset Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night, with the No. 14 seed Golden Grizzlies defeating the No. 3 seed Wildcats 80-76.

Oakland was led by sharpshooter Jack Gohlke, who scored 32 points and made 10 3-pointers.

Kentucky has now won just one NCAA Tournament game in the last five seasons, while John Calipari’s future as coach of the Wildcats is increasingly in question.

The Golden Grizzlies will face the winner of Texas Tech vs. North Carolina State for a spot in the Sweet 16.

On Yahoo, 95.8 percent of brackets picked Kentucky to beat Oakland, the third-most seed in the field.

Oakland head coach Greg Kampe won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time.

Kampe has been Oakland’s head coach since 1984, when the school was still in Division II.

It was Oakland’s first time in the NCAA tournament since 2011 and earned a spot by winning the Horizon League.

Gohlke was 3 points away from tying the NCAA tournament record for shots from beyond the arc made in a single game with 11.

Kentucky entered the game as a 13.5-point favorite despite the Wildcats’ recent NCAA Tournament performance.

Calipari hasn’t guided the Wildcats out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament since 2019, a five-year span that some would find unacceptable at a blue blood like Kentucky.

Gohlke only arrived on the Oakland campus this season as a transfer from Division II Hillsdale College.
