And she continued, “I found myself in a situation where I was afraid of myself and my ideas. And you finally choose to seek the right help. I took a short break from social media as well.
“During this process of asking for help, I was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder,” she noted. I made the personal decision to start therapy right away, because I really feel like I’ve tried everything else up until that point. I guess I’ve been in denial for a very long time about this diagnosis.

After a lifetime of hearing only ‘negative’ adjectives describing someone with a mental health condition that includes periods of depression and periods of elevated mood, called hypomania, I was surprised to find that it was ‘much more’ than just mood swings.
It was really a relief to finally have an explanation for certain things. It enabled me to learn more about it, and take back control. I am not ashamed of my diagnosis. Holmes added: I will not allow anyone to try to make me feel ashamed of it.
She also made it clear that she “would not allow anyone to use her ‘diagnosis’ as a scapegoat for treating ‘her’ badly.”

Holmes has also described herself as “strong, imaginative, sympathetic, and adaptable” and mused that her bipolar disorder also contributed to her “great sense of humor”.
