Jackson Holliday will reportedly be called back up to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. According to the Baltimore BannerIt will be the No. 1 prospect’s first time with the big club since he was demoted in April following a difficult time in his MLB career.
Holliday, 20, played 10 games with the Orioles in April and struggled at the plate. In 34 at-bats, he hit .059 with 2 hits, 1 RBI and 18 strikeouts. He returned to Triple-A and has since hit .271/.431/.477 with 10 homers, 38 RBIs and 75 walks in 73 games.
Holliday, the son of former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday, is expected to join the Orioles on Wednesday to finish a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays before embarking on a 10-game road trip to Cleveland, Toronto and Tampa.
In addition to his recovery at the plate in Triple-A, Holliday is being promoted after the Orioles made a series of moves before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Connor Norby, who had been their starting second baseman after replacing an injured Jorge Mateo, was sent to the Miami Marlins in a deal. With All-Star Gunnar Henderson locked in at shortstop, Holliday’s natural position, Holliday has moved to second base.
In addition to moving Norby to the Marlins, the players the Orioles brought in include starting pitcher Zach Eflin; relievers Trevor Rogers, Seranthony Dominguez and Gregory Soto; outfielders Eloy Jimenez, Cristian Pache and Austin Hayes; and shortstop Livan Soto.
Holliday has generated high expectations after being the first overall pick in the 2022 draft. He played with all four of the Orioles’ minor league affiliates for the entire 2023 season and got off to a blistering start with Triple-A Norfolk earlier this season. In 10 games at Triple-A before his April promotion, Holliday posted a .333/.482/.595 batting average with two home runs and nine RBIs.
The Orioles currently hold a half-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East with a 64-44 record.
