Kyle’s signature role came in the HBO series Tenacious D (1997-2000), which features the fictional accounts of the real-life duo of the same name, Kyle and Jack, whom he met in the 1990s after joining The Actors Gang in the early 80s.
From the beginning, the boys have focused on heavy rock ‘n’ roll power chords and lyrics that talk about sex, Satan and why they are ‘the best band on Earth.’
Episodes are often capped with scenes of the band performing at an open mic night, and the events in between often serve as inspiration for a song performed at the end.
According to Kyle, HBO offered Tenacious D a deal to do ten episodes, but in doing so, they would have to give up their role as executive producers.
In the end, Kyle and Jack decided to make a movie instead of giving HBO creative control of Tenacious D, and made Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny (2006).
