Jacinda Ardern invites The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert to her wedding in bid to promote New Zealand

Jacinda Ardern invited Late Show host Stephen Colbert to her wedding in a ‘shameless’ attempt to entice American tourists to visit New Zealand.

The New Zealand Prime Minister presented the host with an invitation to her wedding in the air after an impassioned plea for tourists to come and make their country ‘whole again’.

Colbert’s invitation was appropriately scrawled on the back of an advertisement for Air New Zealand’s new direct flight from Auckland to New York, due to start in September.

“Not a very professional invitation, I ripped it out of an InFlight magazine,” the PM laughed as she pulled the folded paper out of her pocket.

Ms Ardern was forced to postpone her wedding to TV presenter partner Clarke Gayford in February following an outbreak of Covid-19 in Auckland.

The PM is currently in the US on a multi-faceted trip around the Harvard University commencement address, which she has been invited to deliver on Friday.

New Zealand officials have not yet been told if Ms Ardern will have an audience with President Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, he met with the head of the United Nations, asset managers BlackRock and gave interviews to some of the world’s leading travel publications, all in one excellent day.

The trip has been designed to promote New Zealand to the world and help struggling tour operators get back on their feet after two years without international visitors.

The appearance on The Late Show focused on the Ms. Ardern storyline, but the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas naturally took most of the billing.

Colbert began his show with an impassioned plea for gun control, saying, “I’ll tell you who’s done something about it: New Zealanders.”

After introducing Ms Ardern, Mr Colbert invited her to explain the reforms to New Zealand’s gun law that followed the attack on Christchurch mosques in 2019.

“When I watch from afar and see events like today, I don’t think of them as politicians, I see them only as a mother and I am very sorry for what happened here,” she said.

We are a very pragmatic people. When we saw something like this happen, everyone said ‘Never again’.

“We have legitimate gun needs in our country for things like pest control… but you don’t need a military-style semi-automatic weapon to do that. So we got rid of them.

Mr. Colbert focused on the purpose of the interview: to stimulate New Zealand tourism, which allowed Ms. Ardern to deliver her best selling work.

“We’re open,” Ms. Ardern told the audience.

‘Welcoming guests to New Zealand is a big part of who we are. Hospitality is part of our identity… please come back and make us whole again, you are most welcome.’

Ms. Ardern is no stranger to the show. She has appeared several times and forged a friendship with Mr. Colbert due to her love of New Zealand and The Lord of the Rings, where the film adaptation was filmed.

Wearing what the local New Zealand Newsroom described as a ‘bright pink pantsuit’ by Kiwi designer Juliette Hogan, Ms Ardern went on to describe her family life with partner Clarke Gayford and their daughter Neve, and her recent coronavirus diagnosis.

‘I have Covid for Mother’s Day. That was Clarke’s gift to me,” she said.

That Covid-19 outbreak has been cited by Ms Ardern’s office as the reason she has yet to meet with Mr Biden, with the White House operating under strict pandemic protocols.

Ardern said a morning meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres focused on climate, sustainability and the war in Ukraine.

He is traveling with Trade Minister Damien O’Connor and a business delegation and is pleased to be able to arrange a meeting with BlackRock on his behalf.
