Four people have been killed and two others seriously injured in a horrific car accident in Illinois that split a car in two.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” witness Joanna Proszek said WLS from what she saw after the crash, which caused authorities to shut down the area for most of the day on Saturday.

Proszek, a nearby resident, had heard the sounds of the horrific crash and ran outside to help.

“It was bad, tragic. I think they just started flying because there is a hill. So I think they just cranked the engine and just flew into the tree.”

On Sunday, none of the victims were publicly identified, but WLS reports that two people were pronounced dead at the scene and two more died after being taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, authorities say they are investigating whether speeding may have played a possible role in the fatal accident, which ripped the vehicle apart and split it in two.

Photos taken by the news outlet show the rear half of a blue-grey Mercedes SUV, with the rest of the extremely damaged vehicle nearby, airbags deployed and all.

The condition of the two occupants who survived the crash has not yet been released on Sunday.
