ITV viewers slam The Fortune Hotel and fume it’s an ‘absolute carbon copy’ of BBC’s The Traitors after first episode airs

ITV viewers criticized The Fortune Hotel and were angry that it was an “absolute rip-off” of BBC show The Traitors while watching the first episode on Monday night.

Dubbed the newer, brighter and more charming version of The Traitors, the show sees its contestants having to lie to each other, take part in challenges and find out who the traitors are while staying at a luxurious Caribbean resort.

The show takes ten couples to the posh hotel to give them the chance to win £250,000.

The couples will each be given a briefcase, and only one of them will keep the cash inside. Each day, contestants will compete in challenges to try to find out who has the most important case.

But those who watch the show have said it will “never compare” to The Traitors, which has had two seasons and is a murder mystery show set in a Scottish castle.

Those on Twitter said: ‘What is this? Traitors meet the coach ride and meet deal or no deal? #hotelfortuna.’,

‘Even the slow music is an absolute copy of The Traitors #TheFortuneHotel #FortuneHotel.’,

“I’m going to watch The Fortune Hotel with an open mind, but nothing, and I mean nothing, will EVER compare to The Traitors #TheFortuneHotel #FortuneHotel.”

“I can’t remember where I’ve seen a show very similar to this before #FortuneHotel.”

‘The nerd in me wants to know how many producers/editors were stolen from #TheTraitors. Either way, I’m here for this show.’,

‘So #FortuneHotel is basically #traitors on a tropical island with briefcases?’,

‘Is this for people who didn’t pass the Los Traidores audition process? #TheFortuneHotel #FortuneHotel.’,

‘I’m not sure how you feel about this. Looks like a cheap version of the traitors so far #fortunehotel’.

Others, however, were enjoying the show as one wrote: ‘I’m actually really enjoying this!’

Another said: ‘YES, YES, YES, well done everyone. I’m all in on @FortuneHotelUK @itv @itvxofficial it’s brilliant, the concept really works and it’s only half done. They’ll definitely have me this week!’

On the show, every day contestants will compete in challenges to try to find out who has the most important case.

At the end of the day, the couple can exchange or keep their cases.

The couple who has the money must lie and deceive to escape suspicion, and in one case there is also an advance payment card.

The eight-episode series features business director couple Claire, 43, and solicitor Daniel, 43, both from Gloucestershire.

Claire said they took the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone.

“We always embraced adventure and wanted to do something together,” he said.

“The opportunity to do something outside your comfort zone is always a good thing.”

Her husband Daniel said participating in the show also tested their relationship at times.

“I would say all the challenges were a real bonding experience for everyone, the sun was shining, we were all excited and it gave us a chance to really get to know each other,” he said.

“There was also a funny moment where Claire and I got into a fight because she wasn’t happy with how competitive I was, even though I reminded her that the point of the show is to compete.

Host Stephen Mangan, an actor and comedian, said taking the new job was a no-brainer for him.

“The opportunity to travel to the Caribbean seemed very interesting on its own, even before addressing everything else that goes into it,” he said.

“That’s what first caught my attention, but when they explained the game to me and I played it, it was just brilliant.”

“The game is quite simple but endlessly fascinating, so a combination of that together with the backdrop in which it was set was simply irresistible.

“People are endlessly fascinating to me as an actor and the reason you become an actor is because people and how they get along with each other, especially in times of high stress, is deeply fascinating.

“Human beings are complex and interesting, so The Fortune Hotel seemed like the perfect combination of entertainment and drama. It’s a way to bring people together under pressure in an awesome place.

“The whole package was incredibly intriguing to me, so I had to be a part of it.”

In January, the BBC’s The Traitors averaged 6.4 million viewers per episode.

The show was a competition series based on strategy, suspicion and deception, filmed in the Scottish Highlands, where a team of players competed in a series of missions and had to discover which members of the group were “traitors”.

The BBC show doubled its audience in the second season and has since been licensed in Australia and the United States.

The Fortune Hotel airs Monday to Thursday at 9pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player from May 13.
