He wrote on Twitter: “I will be quietly going away. It’s been a very sad week. Like everyone else, my thoughts are only with those girls who lost their lives in Southport.”

“This week and throughout my 36 years I have met some of the most wonderful people. It has been a privilege. Thank you.”

Revealing her exit, Lucy said: ‘This has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever made.

“But now is the right time to move on. For me it has always been the best job in the world, with the best people in the world, in the best region in the world.

‘I am very grateful to have been given this job all those years ago. I have always done my best to make a positive contribution and I hope I will be remembered fondly in the years to come.

‘It has been an absolute honour and privilege to serve the people of this region and I will always have the interests of the North West at heart.

‘A big thank you to all the people who have appeared on the show over the years, sometimes when they have faced very difficult challenges.’
