José Mourinho has enthusiastically praised his compatriot Rubén Amorim, stating that the Sporting Lisbon coach would be “capable of coaching at any club.”
The 39-year-old has been in talks to take charge of both Liverpool and West Ham. Last week, it appeared that the Sporting manager had flown to London to sit down for talks with West Ham representatives about a move to succeed David Moyes.
While his move to Liverpool seems almost out of the question, with the Reds seemingly closing in on a deal to appoint Arne Slot as his successor to Jurgen Klopp, it also appears that a potential move to join the Hammers is now also on the wane.
Despite that, he is still widely regarded as one of the best young managers in European football at the moment, and former Man United, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Mourinho speaks highly of his compatriot.
In an interview with Mais Futebol, Mourinho said: “It’s also a question that I shouldn’t answer, but what can I tell you?” I like (Amorim) as a person, I like him as a coach.
“I think he is capable of training in any league and he is capable of training in any club. But he is in a good league and in a great club.
“It’s his decision and it will depend, or not, on the clubs that want him or don’t want him or want to convince him, with more or less arguments.
“What I am clear about is that I like the person and I like the coach.”
Earlier this week, Amorim apologized for flying out for talks with West Ham. He arrived at a decisive moment of the season for Sporting, who is chasing the League title and has three games left to play this season.
They dropped points in the title race against Porto on Sunday night, after both teams drew 2-2.

Amorim apologized and admitted it was a “mistake” to travel to London last week.
‘It was a mistake. “It wasn’t the right time,” Amorim admitted after flying at such a critical time in the season.
“I always ask my players to be respectful and I have not been, although I have informed the club before.”
“I am very sorry and I apologize to the fans, the club and the players.”
