Matteo Retigui and Matteo Pessina scored as Italy beat Malta 2-0 in Group C of the Euro 2024 qualifiers on Sunday.
Defending champions Italy were looking to get back on track after losing 2-1 at home to England in the start of their qualifying campaign last Thursday.
Italy needed a quarter of an hour to score the first goal when Retigi evaded control while executing a corner kick and scored with a header, before Pesina increased the difference after a cross from Emerson in the 27th minute.
Vincenzo Grifo was close to scoring the third goal, but Malta goalkeeper Henry Bonello saved his shot brilliantly.
England easily beat Ukraine 2-0 earlier in the day to seal coach Gareth Southgate’s grip on top of the group.
