The death toll under coronavirus among Italian doctors today reached 100, while four more died in the past 24 hours.

The Italian doctors’ federation, FNOMCEO, said the figure could even be 101.

According to reports in the Italian media, 30 nurses and nursing assistants have also died of COVID-19.

The toll includes retired physicians who voluntarily returned to work during the outbreak.

They were among the approximately 8,000 medical personnel who volunteered to volunteer for a coronavirus emergency task force last month.

Some hospitals in Lombardy and other severely affected areas face half of the staff required to treat the number of patients admitted, Il Messeggero reported.

According to official figures, most of these victims worked in and around Lombardy, the region at the center of the Italian outbreak, although doctors also died further south in Le Marche, Campania, Sicily and Puglia.

In total, 13,121 health workers contracted the new coronavirus in Italy, according to the latest count from the Italian Higher Health Institute (ISS).

“We can no longer allow our doctors, our health workers, to be sent to fight without any protection against the virus,” FNOMCeO president Filippo Anelli said on the association’s website.

Rome’s ISS Public Health Institute estimates that 10 percent of those infected with the new coronavirus in Italy work in healthcare.

The pandemic has been found to take a huge emotional and psychological toll on the doctors and nurses working on the front lines.

In Italy, two nurses have already committed suicide and psychologists have mobilized therapists and online platforms to consult medical personnel for free.

Yesterday, the Italian authorities announced that they would screen doctors for signs of coronavirus immunity.

The northern regions of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna hope to grant ‘licenses’ to return to work for people who turn out to be immune, but officials admit that the antibody tests may not work.

The total official death toll in Italy on Thursday evening is 17,669.

The country has started considering ending the shutdown after a delay in new infections.
