It is over! Rugby League World Cup is POSTPONED after champions Australia and New Zealand withdrew from UK-hosted tournament over Covid-19 safety concerns
The Rugby League World Cup has been postponed following the withdrawals of defending champions Australia and New Zealand.
The tournament, set to take place in the UK in October, was at stake after the two countries in the southern hemisphere cited “concerns for the wellbeing and safety of players” over the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sportsmail revealed a week ago that there was a 50-50 chance of the World Cup going ahead, as organizers frantically scrambled to address Australia and New Zealand’s concerns and beg them to attend the match.
Meetings with all countries involved would include detailed briefings on Covid protocols and quarantine measures to ensure participants’ safety during the World Cup.
Players were then invited to participate in an anonymous survey if they wanted to continue with the tournament.
The confirmation of the postponement comes just days after all 16 National Rugby League clubs supported Australia and New Zealand’s decision not to travel to the tournament.
