This is the small Philippine tropical island that has become famous for the 100 pairs of twins that dominate the sparse population.

Schools, homes and families on the island of Alabat are invaded by identical and non-identical siblings.

The last miraculous babies are Gian and John, who are happy to share their hammock.

But as four-month-olds will discover, see how your brother or sister is far from being something out of the ordinary where they live.

According to local legend, the growing number of twins in the Alabat began several generations ago.

There are now 78 pairs of non-identical twins and 22 pairs of identical twins, including a pair of joined twins. Many of the brothers continue to dress in the same way in adulthood.

The oldest surviving couple are the 86-year-old grandmothers Eudosia and Antonia Meras, who are now both widows.

Antonia, who got married when she was only 19, told how her husband quickly learned to differentiate identical twins.

"In the first days, my husband often confused Eudosia with me," he revealed. There were some embarrassing moments when my husband made loving propositions to my sister thinking it was me.

"Then I showed him that I have a mole on my nose, while my sister does not have one, that solved the problem once and for all."

Her sister Eudosia revealed that she has a mole, but it is on her lips, which, according to her, makes her speak.

"Look, I have a mole on my lower lip and that's why I'm very talkative," he said. In our life, we noticed that there are twins like us in the whole island.

"Most of us wear identical clothes and people have trouble identifying who is who," he added.

Grandmothers are now the latest in a growing line of twins.

The granddaughter of Antonia, Stella Amargo, 21, is a third generation twin. But unlike the grandmothers, who hope to reach 100 together, he does not get along with his brother.

"My sister is not here, now we have our own lives," Stella said. I can tell you that it is not easy to grow up with a twin brother or sister.

"Twins tend to be envious of the attention, love, care and attention their siblings receive, which is always the case: one is the favorite and the other is not.

"You can fool others, but parents can easily differentiate between us, simply by observing our behavior, even when we try to supplant ourselves."

She added: "Apart from our twin grandmother, my grandfather on my father's side are twins, and I also have twin relatives, and across the street live neighbors who are fraternal twins."

The neighbors they are talking about are Jane Carla and John Carlo, eight years old. His mother Virginia Belo has twin brothers and her mother is also twin.

The youngest twins on the island, Gain and John, are in good hands.

Although the parents of the babies are not twins, their mother Gaylee Diomela has an aunt and an uncle, and the paternal grandparents of the babies are twins.

On weekends, visitors to Alabat Island are surprised to see so many groups of twins wondering about the unique tropical island.

Not all twins look alike. Ronalyn and Romalyn, 38, are different and have different body sizes and heights.

Others differ widely in temperament. Rolando Consulta, 45, is nothing like his twin brother, says his wife, Purita Consulta.

She said: & # 39; My husband has a twin brother and they look almost identical. He and his brother wear the same clothes, but I can easily distinguish them. My husband is talkative and ill tempered, while his brother Roberto is calm and quiet.

The united twins Joy and Joyce Magsino were born united in the forehead. Sonia and Cynthia from her grandmother were also twins. The girls, now 11, are waiting to undergo surgery to separate.

"Identical twins are a miracle of nature," said Nikki Roberts, of the Association of Multiple and Multiple Births, to MailOnline.

Only one percent of births are twins. And of these only one third are identical.

Non-identical twins are created when a woman produces two eggs at the same time and both are fecundated, each with a different sperm.

"Identical twins are produced when a single egg is fertilized and divided into two babies that create the same genes, physical characteristics and sex.

"United twins occur when the egg separates very late after being fertilized."
