With its promise of fight scenes, seduction and secret romances, My Lady Jane will rival the raunchiest regency show of the year so far, Bridgerton.

Set in an alternate fantasy Tudor world, Prime Video’s new historical series, available June 27, is a radical retelling of English royal history, completely reimagining the life of the Tudor queen, Lady Jane Grey.

Edward, Henry VIII’s sickly first son, does not succumb to tuberculosis, while Henry’s niece, Lady Jane Grey, notoriously remembered as the “nine-day queen,” is not beheaded at age 17 to make way for Maria I.

And, where Bridgerton features racy scenes between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, played by the magnificent Luke Newton and the stunning Nicola Coughlan, My Lady Jane appears to be a worthy contender in the stakes.

From Lady Jane Gray (newcomer Emily Bader) and Guildford Dudley (Sex Education’s Edward Bluemel) erotically charged dagger fights to shirtless shower scenes and stolen kisses, viewers looking for their next royal romp won’t be disappointed.

Fast-paced and witty, the show bills itself as “an epic story,” where the irrepressible Jane ultimately triumphs over her detractors to “save herself, her true love, and then the Kingdom.”

While, as the trailer says, “history remembers Jane as the ultimate damsel in distress known for her death rather than her life,” the new series paints a very different picture of the royal as a “hero,” “rebel.” ” and “warrior.” ‘.

Focused on achieving independence, something few Tudor women could aspire to, Jane confronts those who hold her back, including her evil parents, who laugh as they tell her “no one cares what you want.”

My Lady Jane is inspired by the New York Times bestselling book by American author Cynthia Hand.

Speaking to Publishers Weekly, Hand said: “I wanted to write a novel about Lady Jane Grey, a determined and studious teenager in 16th century England.

‘She had the misfortune to become queen, but only for nine days and then her head was cut off.

‘I always loved studying the Jane Gray story, except for the ending. So I thought, “Hey, I’m a writer. I can give it a different ending.”

Emily Bader plays Lady Jane Gray in the new series. While the real-life Jane was beheaded at age 17, the Jane of the new series fights to save herself and the Kingdom.

Who was Lady Jane Grey? The nine-day-old queen who was imprisoned in the Tower of London and sentenced to death when she was a teenager for treason

Often described as one of the most tragic figures in Tudor history, Lady Jane Gray was the great-niece of Henry VIII and first cousin of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I.

She was the eldest daughter of Henry Gray and his wife, Lady Frances Brandon.

Through her mother, she was also a great-granddaughter of Henry VII.

Lady Jane had two younger sisters, Lady Catherine and Lady Mary.

When the 15-year-old King Edward was dying, he named Jane as successor to the Crown in his will, ahead of her half-sister Mary.

But Lady Jane had the shortest reign in English history, from July 10 to July 19, 1553, when the Privy Council proclaimed Mary Queen.

Jane was then imprisoned in the Tower of London. She and her husband, Lord Guildford Dudley, were accused of high treason, found guilty and sentenced to death, although their lives were initially spared.

She was still a teenager at the time of her death on February 12, 1554, and was posthumously considered a Protestant martyr.

Her father, the Duke of Suffolk, son and heir of Thomas Gray, 2nd Marquess of Dorset, was also found guilty of treason and executed days after his daughter was beheaded.

The star-studded cast includes Jordan Peters (Pirates; All I Know About Love) as King Edward and Dominic Cooper (Preacher) as Lord Seymour.

Jane’s mother, Lady Frances Gray, is played by Anna Chancellor (Pennyworth) and Guildford’s father is played by Rob Brydon (The Trip). Jim Broadbent (The Duke) plays the Duke of Leicester, Jane’s uncle.

Henry Ashton (Creation Stories) is Guildford’s brother Stan, and Isabella Brownson (Napoleon) and Robyn Betteridge (Wheel of Time) are Jane’s sisters.

Kate O’Flynn (Landscapers) and Abbie Hern (Enola Holmes 2) play the king’s sisters, Princess Mary and Princess Bess, respectively.

The highly anticipated show has already become a topic of conversation online, with fans taking to X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to share their excitement for the upcoming series.

One Reddit user seemed to have Bridgerton on his mind when he enthused: “Another true costume series that’s actually a raunchy sex comedy.” I’m here for it.’
