Irish PUBS could be transformed into remote work hubs as part of the country’s plans for a life after Covid

  • The Irish government has released a five-year rural development plan after a pandemic
  • Contains the idea of turning rural Irish pubs into remote working hubs
  • A national network of 400 remote hubs would be established

Irish pubs could be turned into remote working hubs as part of the country’s plans for rural villages after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The idea is part of the Irish government’s five-year rural development policy Our Rural Future, released Monday.

The goal is “for a thriving rural Ireland that is an integral part of our national economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being and development.”

The Our Rural Future strategy aims to revitalize such rural villages and provide the local population with a better quality of life.

As part of the proposal, one fifth of civil servants would move to remote or home work by the end of 2021.

A national network of 400 remote hubs would be set up, some of which are specifically for public sector employees.

“ As we come out of Covid-19, the new policy is about maximizing recovery for all parts of the country and giving a better quality of life to people living and working in rural areas, ” said Rural and Community Development Minister Heather Humphreys .

Ireland is the first country to make such a suggestion as part of its post-pandemic vision.

Concerns have been expressed about the need for high-speed broadband in such areas. Irish MP Michael Collins said there were “huge problems” with the plan.

“A lot of people have come back from the cities to work in rural communities and the broadband is shocking,” he said.

“I have hundreds and hundreds of people in west Cork who are pulling their hair out because they can’t get broadband at home.”

The Irish government has included a tax reform for outside workers and employers as part of the strategy.

The proposals come after some UK pubs last year offered ‘pub desks’ to workers tired of working from home every day during the pandemic.

The Famers Arms in Goldcliffe, near Newport, South Wales, gave workers the chance to book a three hour time slot last October and work from the pub for the price of £ 10.

The slot included a pub table to work at, Wi-Fi, a power outlet, unlimited coffee or tea and a sandwich, also giving employees the chance to socialize with other cafe visitors.

The pub’s co-owner Craig Leith said, “It makes sense. People are in the same routine at home day after day and their mental health suffers. ‘
