With the puppy off-camera, the president responds playfully to his pet, as he is clearly used to this kind of distraction from his furry companion.

President Higgins has had Bernese Mountain Dogs for over 19 years, and every morning his pets join him on his walk through the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin.

A versatile working dog from Switzerland, Bermese Mountain Dogs were bred to herd livestock and pull carts and can weigh up to 120 lbs and grow up to 70 cm.

Affectionately known as ‘the Bernese’, although the dogs are easy to train, they are prone to a variety of health issues and shed a lot in the spring and fall.
