Iran said it had discovered a huge stockpile of lithium, according to state media. Lithium is the main component for the production of batteries for electric cars and electronic devices, while Australia, Chile, Argentina and China are among the most prominent countries producing this metal.

State TV said in Iran Quoting the official in the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade, Mohammad Hadi Ahmadi on Saturday, “For the first time in Iran, a deposit of lithium has been discovered in Hamedan.” This stockpile is estimated at “8.5 million tons,” according to the Director General of the Ministry’s Operations Department.

Dubbed “the oil of the 21st century”, lithium is a key ingredient in the manufacture of electric car batteries. It is supposed to allow cars to dispense with fuel that emits carbon dioxide.

This white mineral is also essential for the production of rechargeable batteries used in cell phones and other electronic devices.

According to a report published by the US Geological Survey in 2022, there are 89 million tons of lithium worldwide.

Australia, Chile, Argentina and China are among the leading producers of this metal.

And in the year 2022, lithium prices will increase significantly, due to the high prices of components and inflation in general, while the demand for clean transportation has increased all over the world.

Moreover, Iran, whose economy has been affected by international sanctions, especially the US, has many natural resources such as gas, oil, copper and iron.
