An interior design expert has revealed how to make your home look and feel more expensive, without spending a fortune or having to renovate.

Nicholas Holmes is an interior designer and furniture buyer at Kmart Australia and he told FEMAIL how to achieve a ‘luxury for less’ look.

Instead of buying new curtains or a rug, the 38-year-old from Melbourne encouraged Australians to add an “unexpected” pop of colour.

“Don’t be afraid to try a color that isn’t currently available,” she explained.

‘Try it on something small, like the lilac side table from Kmart. An unexpected moment of color makes a space feel truly designed.’

Once you get started, you can expand further into the area, but Mr. Holmes said you should start in smaller spaces.

She also shared two other ways to create a designer space using furniture and décor elements.

‘Layers: If you’re only focusing on a small space, layering that area will make it more impactful than spreading out multiple elements,’ she said.

“Investing in three throw pillows instead of three random items is a striking way to update a space,” she continued.

Mr. Holmes also recommended playing with “high-gloss finishes,” such as shiny products.

“We have a lot of ceramics that come in the form of glassware and reflective surfaces, which adds that element of something special to a space and makes it feel really high-end,” she said.

Kmart Australia is set to launch a range of stunning new wine glasses, lamps and kitchen essentials later this month as part of the August Living range.

Customers will be able to get their hands on the latest products online and in-store starting July 25.

The collection includes trend-setting rugs, mirrors, chairs and small decorative items.

“With this launch we have been bolder and more courageous with the colours. We have also offered something new to every type of customer – there is something for everyone,” said Holmes.

The budget retailer is also set to bring back a variety of popular items, including the Gigi floor lamp, which went viral and sold out earlier this year.
