Despite the cost of living crisis, Britons are not being hit by the highest charges in the world for a range of goods and services, according to new research.

Although childcare, rent and cigarette costs are among the most expensive in the world, there are still places worse off.

A bottle of beer, according to research from Numbeo, Compare the Market and Expensivity, will set someone in the UK back an average of £4.71, compared to £4.75 in the US.

Instagram influencers in Qatar will have to hand over £8.89, while people in South Africa will pay £1.33.

For cigarettes, it is a similar situation. 20 Marlboro in the UK is around £13 compared to 38p in Nigeria. However, Australians must pay £22.55.

Petrol is another area where Brits can feel taken advantage of with a liter of unleaded averaging £1.54, double the price in the US.

Whereas a liter of fuel in Libya is 2p, while anyone looking to sit in Hong Kong’s gridlock will see their wallet empty every time they fill up their car at £2.36 a litre.

For childcare, the British pay an average of £1,239 a month, compared to £21.68 in Sri Lanka.

While milk in Jamaica is more than twice as expensive as it is in the UK, Caribbean residents pay £2.66 per liter compared to £1.23 here.

The Swiss also top the list for a three-course meal for two in an average restaurant – costing £106, compared to £60 in the UK.

The Swiss are also the most expensive for cinema tickets, running shoes and public transport.

Even for a simple loaf of bread, Brits pay midway between the most expensive and the cheapest, handing over an average of £1.21, compared to £2.80 in the Commonwealth of Independent States or 12p in Algeria.
