Founded in 1967, the Hoffman Process is a week-long intensive retreat in which participants are taught to “live more consciously” by identifying and dismantling patterns of behavior.
The process begins weeks before entering the retreat; attendees must speak with several counselors and fill out “extensive” forms to identify their behavior patterns, vices and anxieties.
The registration process, which can take up to 12 hours, also requires participants to delve deeper into their childhood and their relationships with their parents or caregivers.
Hoffman’s trainer Matt Brannagan tells DailyMail.com that applicants seek out the programme to deal with all sorts of issues, from problems at work and parenting to finding their purpose in life.
“It’s not like we’re saying, ‘Oh, this is for people with childhood issues.’ We’re saying, ‘This is for people who want to improve their lives now.’ We just know that looking holistically across a person’s lifespan is one way to support that,” she explained.
Once inside, participants engage in a series of daily activities, including watching presentations, guided meditation, visualization exercises, and journaling.
“A lot of people recognize that they have to work through certain elements of anger, resentment and addiction. We have experiences that relate to that, including some forms of cathartic release,” Brannagan shared.
There is no special treatment for celebrity participants, as top stars are required to participate alongside regular attendees.

“Everyone, including celebrities, goes through the same program,” Brannagan said.
“I think that’s part of what they value, isn’t it? The opportunity to come and be in an environment where they feel supported, where they’re in a group of people who are working on themselves as they are, without any kind of need to be special or to be seen as different,” she continued.
“And some of these people who are celebrities, some of whom have gone public, some of whom haven’t, have told me that that’s been one of the most rewarding experiences, just being in a group of people where they’re not treated differently, where they’re not treated differently.”
In an interview with Jamie Kern Lima in early AugustToday co-host Hoda Kotb credited Hoffman’s 2021 retirement experience with making her a better mother and suggested it may have inspired her to call off her engagement to ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman.

“So often, the ways we operate in the world are somewhat compulsive and automatic, and if we step back a little bit and become more aware, we recognize that there are a lot of choices in how we conduct our lives,” he continued.
‘So the process is very much about helping people recognize the areas where they have choices and supporting them to exercise them more fluidly in their lives.’
He added: “It’s something we really believe people can benefit from.”
