Police have released disturbing images of the living conditions of a non-verbal man with Down syndrome who weighed just 29 kilograms when he died, while authorities identified his carer as a person of interest.
Isaac Oar, 56, was pronounced dead at an Alice Street address in Ayr, south of Townsville, on August 10, 2023.
Queensland Police are investigating Mr Oar’s care and treatment and have issued a new public appeal for information.
In heartbreaking images released Thursday, officers can be seen walking through a house in 2023 packed with belongings piled on top of each other.
The entrances to the rooms of the house are blocked by boxes with objects coming out of bags and containers.
Police are urging members of the Burdekin community to come forward with information regarding Mr Oar’s care and treatment.
“Isaac was found severely malnourished; he only weighed 29kg at the time of his death,” Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd told reporters on Thursday.
“He was being cared for by a family member.
Queensland Police have released images from inside Isaac Oar’s home in a bid to gather more information about his death.

The entrances to the rooms of the house were blocked by boxes with objects coming out of bags and containers.
“He had not and had not received any professional medical treatment in over a decade, so the investigation is quite complex.”
“We believe that people would have had contact with family members, they would have had contact with the house at times during the years before his death, and we believe that those people could help us.”
Police allege Mr Oar’s condition is due to years of neglect.
Det Insp Shepherd said Mr Oar’s primary carer, his older sister, was a person of interest in his investigation.

Footage released on Thursday shows police in 2023 entering the house to investigate the living conditions in which Mr Oar was living.
There is no indication that any crime has been committed.
“At this stage the main person of interest is the primary carer,” Inspector Shepherd said.
“There is no other information to suggest that other people would have been involved with him, which would lead to him being in the state in which he was found.”
If police did not find the offender responsible, the investigation would move to the coroner and potentially a coroner’s inquest, Inspector Shepherd said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward with information about Mr Oar.
