A convicted killer who stole Nick Kyrgios’ bright green Tesla Model

The 33-year-old Canberra man was fined $2500 in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to two charges of trespass and three counts of damaging property.

Magistrate James Lawton did not give him time to pay the fines, meaning they will ultimately be settled while in custody.

The man, who has already spent more than 10 months in prison and cannot be named for legal reasons, is currently awaiting sentencing at the Supreme Court after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery.

Court documents show the tennis star’s mother knocked on his door around 8:30 a.m. on May 1, 2023.

The accusation relates to an incident in which he threatened Kyrgios’ mother at gunpoint in order to steal the tennis star’s Tesla Model X last year.

Court documents show the tennis star’s mother knocked on his door around 8:30 a.m. on May 1, 2023.

She was confronted by a man holding a “long-barreled” gun who demanded the keys to the Tesla parked outside before leaving.

The car thief served prison time for killing student Clea Rose in 2005.

Court documents show he broke into a property in Ainslie, in Canberra’s north, and climbed onto the roof of a shed before jumping onto the roof of another house.

An occupant of the house got a ladder to help the offender down from the roof when the 33-year-old removed part of an air conditioning unit and caused water to gush out.

He then jumped off the roof and landed in a tree, where he began playing with a pink armband, a telephone line and the water pipe he had removed from the air conditioner.

After a while, he jumped onto a gazebo, which suffered damage.

It is understood police did not catch up with the offender until he was arrested for stealing Kyrgios’ car.

Defense lawyer Jan De Bruin told the court the attacker said he had a psychotic episode, believing someone was chasing him.

The prosecutor said the rooftop incident had caused “significant concern” among people living in the area.

Passing sentence, Mr Lawton described Ainslie’s incident as “very bizarre”, saying it was “clearly linked to (the offender) having problems with his drug use”.

He spoke of the offender’s “long and checkered history”, which included a prison sentence for the murder of university student Clea Rose in 2005.

He will be sentenced at a later date for stealing Kyrgios’ car, following an assessment of his eligibility for a drug and alcohol treatment order.
