Sam Kerr’s withdrawal from the Olympics has had a silver lining for the Matildas star, allowing him to enjoy a luxury holiday in Mexico with his fiancee and fellow footballer Kristie Mewis.
While her Australian teammates tested their pace in Adelaide ahead of Friday night’s friendly against China, the couple enjoyed the sun, sea and sumptuous surroundings at a world-class resort in Los Cabos.
With rooms costing up to $6,800 a night, the Viceroy hotel features incredible views of the Sea of Cortez, five picturesque pools, state-of-the-art rooms with water views, a rooftop bar, and several gourmet dining options.

Kerr is shown resting and relaxing a lot after what has been a stressful few months so far this year, thanks to his serious injury and legal dramas.
In recent days, Kerr and Mewis have treated their social media followers to glimpses of their stylish vacation, showing them dressing to the nines for a meal, lounging in their room, riding ponies and even watching a performance by an artist who dances with fire while her hair spins.
A clip from Mewis’ TikTok shows her dancing while putting on her makeup before heading out, with Kerr entering the room and showing off the engagement ring she publicly debuted in April.
Kerr repeatedly captioned photos from the hotel with the words “in paradise” while posting photos of his fiancée taking in the surroundings.
The Matildas captain has been sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury in January, which robbed her of the opportunity to play as Chelsea won the Women’s Super League title for the fifth year in a row.
His ACL tear crushed his dream of representing Australia at the Paris Olympics in July, and his omission from the team was officially revealed earlier this month.
In a video taken in Mexico, Kerr (pictured with Mewis) is seen showing off the gold and diamond wedding band on her left ring finger.
That capped a shocking start to 2024 for the 30-year-old, who was accused of racially harassing a police officer in a bombshell announcement in March.
She pleaded not guilty, but suffered another setback when her defense team’s efforts to have the charge dismissed failed, leaving her facing a four-day trial in February next year.
Mewis had been sidelined by an injury she suffered in February while playing for West Ham and was unsure of her availability to play for the United States at the Olympics when she was interviewed in March.
Meanwhile, Kerr’s Matildas teammates have been training hard ahead of their matches against China on Friday in Adelaide and Monday in Sydney.
Mary Fowler is certain to be present in Paris unless she is injured, but several other members of the team are chasing the three Olympic spots that coach Tony Gustavsson has revealed are still up for grabs.
The Swede has chosen 15 of the 18 players he can take to France, with a place reserved for Katrina Gorry if she can overcome her ankle injury, which required surgery.
That means the remaining spots are being chased by the likes of Courtney Nevin, Cortnee Vine, and Charli Grant.
“The worst part about being a head coach is that I have to tell someone at the end of this week that you’re not going to the Olympics,” Gustavsson said.
“It involves a lot of evaluation of training, observing the players, meetings with the technical staff, and the preparation is not just about the game, but about the Olympic Games.
“The game is a big step in preparing for the Olympics… we don’t have many games left to prepare, so it’s a very, very important game.”
