Inside a real-life ghost ship: Extraordinary pictures of massive vessel captured by explorers before it was sent to the scrap heap show luxury boat in an eerie light

  • The MS Astor first put to sea in 1968 and was later abandoned in 2021.

Harrowing photographs captured by explorers show the interior of an abandoned vessel in an eerie light before it was sent to the scrapyard.

The MS Astor first sailed in 1968 and spent 34 years at sea, carrying passengers on luxury cruise ships.

But in 2021, the ship was sent to one of the world’s largest demolition sites in Aliaga, Turkey, where it remained desolate and uninhabited for several years.

Bob Thissen, 35, and his team of Urban Explorers were able to board the MS Astor before it was destroyed, capturing some eerie images of the abandoned ship.

The tables and chairs are just as they were when the ship was in use, while an image of the ship’s retro bar shows drinks still on the tables as if someone had just been there.

One disturbing image shows a deep, empty pool in a dark room next to wooden lounge chairs and a fallen flower pot.

A spooky spa room is seen with ghostly lighting, with the equipment still on the bed and a robe hanging on the wall.

A large room inside the ship appears haunted, as the chairs are still in place and trash is visible on the floor.

Other images show a theater with all the chairs still in a row, while another shows the ship’s gym still perfectly intact even though no one has used it for years.

Thissen said: “We obtained permission from BMS Ship Recycling to explore this ship before it was scrapped – a unique opportunity.”

“It’s strange to see a place like a cruise ship, which is normally full of life, totally empty.

“It’s really sad that a ship in perfect condition like the Astor has been scrapped, I’m sure she could have served many more years if it weren’t for the pandemic.”

It comes months after police boarded an abandoned narco-submarine ‘ghost ship’ found off the coast of Spain, a day after another underwater vessel with bodies on board was discovered off the coast of Colombia.

The 50-foot semisubmersible was seen sinking in Vilagarcía de Arousa, off the coast of the northern Spanish province of Pontevedra in the Galicia region, last March.

The images showed only the bow of the boat emerging from the waves and authorities inspecting the vessel, which was in a nearly vertical position.
