Thursday evening Elon Musk confirmed that conservatives were banned by Twitter, despite not violating any policies. As the latest installments of the Twitter Files demonstrated the scale of censorship as well as ‘visibility filtering’ on the social networking platform,
Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, promised to end’shadow banning’ which is secretly reducing a person’s tweets or trending topics to limit their reach.
He stated that Twitter is currently working on a software update to show your true account status. This will allow you to see clearly if you’ve been shadow bashed, the reason, and how you can appeal.
Musk, 51, singled out Yoel Roth, the global head of trust and safety, who wrote in internal messages that he wanted more creative ways of censoring and muffling specific accounts and content.
Musk stated that the former head of Twitter censorship was not entirely impartial. He also provided a screenshot from a tweet Roth wrote in 2017 in which he claimed there were ‘actual Nazis’ in the White House.
Musk however defended Jack Dorsey (the founder of Twitter)
Jack was unaware of systemic bias, and often disagreeable decisions were made without his approval. He said that the asylum was run by inmates on Thursday night.
“Jack has a pure and honest heart imo.”
The ‘Chief Twit’, as he calls himself, was responding to revelations from journalist Bari Weiss that Twitter kept a ‘secret blacklist’ of topics and accounts to prevent them from trending.
Conservative commentators were deliberately downplayed in what one called ‘Soviet-style bulls***’, while another said he was treated ‘with more censorship than Hamas.’
Elon Musk, 51 years old, has pledged that “everything” will be released as Twitter continues releasing files regarding censorship on his social media platform.
Yoel Rot was the global head for trust and safety at Twitter. Musk highlighted Thursday’s tweet by Roth, in which he referred to Trump White House as full of “actual Nazis” in a 2017 tweet
Specialist teams were formed to handle 200 cases per day.
People who challenged the COVID orthodoxy on lockdowns and mask mandates (e.g. Stanford’s Dr Jay Bhattacharya), were also placed onto a’search list’.
Jack Dorsey, then-CEO, was asked by Dave Rubin in October 2020: “Do you shadowban based upon political beliefs?” It’s as simple as that.
Dorsey responded: “No.
Vijaya Gadde (Twitter’s head for legal, policy and trust) also denied that Twitter had such blacklists.
‘We do not shadow ban,’ she said in 2018, according to Weiss – speaking alongside Kayvon Beykpour, Twitter’s head of product.
They also stated that they did not believe in shadow bans based on ideology or political views.
Weiss made the revelations Thursday in the second tranche of the so-called The Twitter Files.
She Twitter reported that it used “visibility filtering” to downplay objectionable accounts. Teams of people worked together to reduce the traction gained from individual tweets.
One Twitter insider referred to it as “a very powerful tool”.
The teams working to minimize certain accounts or topics were backed up by a top-level ‘Site Integrity Policy, Policy Escalation Support’ team – where the CEO and top legal advisors would decide sensitive cases of censorship. Parag Agrawal (his successor as CEO) and Jack Dorsey were both part of the team.
Musk was delighted to hear about the details of the company he now controls – he retweeted Weiss’ thread with a popcorn emoticon.
He said, “As @bariweiss clearly explains, the rules were enforced versus the right, but they weren’t against the left.”
He “Truth brings reconciliation.”
According to Bari Weiss (right), Twitter censored conservative commentators Dan Bongino, (left), and Charlie Kirk (right).
According to Weiss, Dr Jay Bhattacharya, who claimed that COVID lockdowns harm children, was also placed by Twitter on a “search blacklist”.
Weiss reported that this practice was known as “visibility filtering” in Twitter.
“Think of visibility filtering as a way for us suppress what people see at different levels. It’s a very powerful tool,” a senior Twitter employee said to her.
Twitter would block individual user searches, make a tweet more difficult to find, block posts on the ‘trending’ page and remove them from hashtag search.
Another source, a Twitter engineer, told Weiss: ‘We control visibility quite a bit. We also control the amplification and promotion of your content quite a lot. The truth is that most people don’t realize how much we control.
Weiss said that Twitter’s Strategic Response Team – Global Escalation Team dealt with the matter, which was known as SRT–GET. This group handled 200 cases per day.
SIP-PES, which stands for Site Integrity Policy and Policy Escalation Support, was a higher-ranking group that dealt with high-profile, complex cases.
Parag Agrawal (his replacement as CEO) and Dorsey sat on both the group and Gadde and Yoel Rot, the global head of safety and trust, respectively.
Roth emailed colleagues on Slack, to say that spam enforcements were used to circumvent safety team members ‘under-enforcing policies’.
The group would need to intervene if any action was taken to limit the popular account @LibsofTiktok – whose account was tabbed internally: ‘Do Not Take Action on User Without Consulting With SIP-PES.’
Musk fired Parag, the CEO, and Vijaya Gadde as head of legal policies as soon as he took over the company. It has been revealed that they were involved in the’shadow bans of accounts’
Weiss said that account was suspended six times in 2022, and the author, Chaya Raichik, was blocked from her account for at least a week each time.
Her Raichik told Raichik that their account was suspended due to violations of Twitter’s hateful conduct policy. However, Twitter internalally admitted that there was no violation.
In an October 2022 memo from SIP-PES obtained by Weiss, the committee concluded that the account ‘has not directly engaged in behavior violative of the Hateful Conduct policy.’
They justified the suspension by saying her posts encouraged online harassment of ‘hospitals and medical providers’ by insinuating ‘that gender-affirming healthcare is equivalent to child abuse or grooming.’
Weiss stated that their response was quite different from that given to Raichik when she was doxxed. Her home address was published online. Raichik complained to Twitter, but Twitter refused the tweet to be taken down and it remains there to this day.
Raichik tweeted, “They suspended my multiple times knowing that I had never violated any policies.” This is what happens when people talk about things they don’t want. These days are gone from Twitter. Thank you @elonmusk.
Musk replied, “You’re welcome. Twitter won’t be perfect in the future, but it will be *much* better.’
Roth was also criticised by Weiss, who said that he was involved in censoring accounts.
She noted that he had written to an employee on the Health, Misinformation, Privacy, and Identity research team wanting to improve ‘non-removal policy interventions like disabling engagements and deamplification/visibility filtering.’
Roth wrote: ‘The hypothesis underlying much of what we’ve implemented is that if exposure to, e.g., misinformation directly causes harm, we should use remediations that reduce exposure, and limiting the spread/virality of content is a good way to do that.’
He Dorsey said that he was supportive of the censorship.
‘We got Jack on board with implementing this for civic integrity in the near term, but we’re going to need to make a more robust case to get this into our repertoire of policy remediations – especially for other policy domains,’ Roth wrote.
Tucker Carlson of Fox News immediately seized upon Weiss’ report and stated that it ‘confirms the truth which many suspected but did not know for certain – that Twitter routinely censors prominent critics against the Biden administration with no factual justification whatsoever.
He It was noted that the Stanford doctor who opposed COVID lockdowns was also blacklisted, claiming it was ‘doubtless at their request’.
Carlson said that they prevented his tweets becoming trending, which meant that most of his tweets could not be seen.
According to Weiss, they once banned him from searching the internet. Users couldn’t find tweets by him because they were inaccurate.
They were correct. That was the crime. That’s always the crime. They don’t punish you for lying; they only punish you when you tell the truth.
He He added, “It was strategic. They weren’t censoring people to be annoying. They were censoring people in order to provide factual information that could have prevented certain policies or election results.
“So, you know that this was sophisticated – and had an impact on American society, I would think.
Kirk told Carlson Thursday night that the report confirmed his long-held suspicions but that he was angry.
“They’re treating me Twitter account with more scrutiny, censorship, than the prime Minister of Iran, Hamas than people who do terroristic type damage,” stated Charlie Kirk, who was labeled ‘does not amplify” in internal tagging.
“Now we [have] There is evidence to support this. My Twitter account has seen a drop in engagement of 95 percent over the past two years.
Fox News commentator Dan Bongino, whose account was put on a ‘search blacklist’, said it was ‘Soviet-style bulls***.’
He He said that he was receiving an average of 115,000 retweets each day at their peak. He is questioning COVID lockdowns.
Kirk told Carlson that he was called conspiracy theorist. He was also smeared. Kirk added that he complained and met Dorsey personally. Dorsey assured Kirk that shadow banning wasn’t happening.
Kirk said the social media company was censoring him because ‘they saw what I had to say as a direct threat to the regime.’
He She said: “They treat my account on Twitter with more scrutiny and control than the prime minister in Iran, Hamas, or people who do actual terroristic-type damage.
“Now we [have] There is evidence to support that. That’s why I created my Twitter account in the last couple of weeks [of]Years has seen a drop in engagement of 95 percent.
“Were they instructed to do this by federal government?” He asked, describing how he saw Twitter transform from a social media platform to a ‘Democrat Super PAC.’
He “Apparently asking questions about the lockdown was a threat,” he added. They were told to do so by Anthony Fauci, the federal government.
We may never know, but Twitter at its best was a place that allowed heterodox ideas to spread. Twitter went out of their way to censor it, and suffocate my account.
He I said: “I’ve heard this for years, so weird that it’s hard to find you on Twitter. You’re a verified accounts, your name’s not common, why don’t you come up?”
“When I talked about this on my show, I was called a conspiracytheorist and a wacko.
Google Ads has banned my website. YouTube has banned me for suggesting cloth masks don’t work. This fact is now scientifically supported.
“Now I realize I am on a not safe to work’ shadow ban on Twitter because I’ve been accused of being a conservative thought crime.
He I added, “Tell me again how do we live in a free nation.”
Raichik, founder of @LibsOfTikTok, told Carlson via phone that she ‘absolutely felt I was being censored’
“I had a very big account. I was not able to trend and now we know that I was on the trend blacklist.
“There were times when I felt that my tweets were getting less engagement than they should, sometimes for days or even weeks.
“Now it’s evident that there was suppression.
Raichik said, “The most bizarre part of this whole situation is that they admitted that I wasn’t even violating the policies and they still suspended my seven times.” Seven times, three for a week at time.
‘So I was suspended for probably a month altogether – and for what?
“Not even violating their policies-just because they don’t like your views. They don’t want it to be there.
The first tranche of documents, posted by Matt Taibbi last week, detail how Twitter in October 2020 decided to censor the New York Post’s reporting on the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop.
They feared that the contents had been obtained by hacking but had no evidence to back it up. However, it was quickly discovered that the laptop had been left at an repair shop.
Jack Dorsey, then-CEO of Twitter admitted that censoring legitimate reports was a serious error.
Twitter’s new owner and ‘Chief Twit’ Elon Musk on Wednesday claimed the ‘most important’ Twitter data was ‘deleted’ and ‘hidden’ from the Dorsey.
Musk, 51 years old, has pledged that ‘everything’ will be released as his newly acquired company continues the release of the Twitter Files.
On Wednesday, Dorsey (46), replied to Musk’s tweet regarding delaying the second batch Twitter Files. He called for the new CEO, to’release all’ at once.
“If transparency is important to build trust, why don’t we just let everyone see everything without filtering? Let people judge for themselves. All discussions about current and future actions. Dorsey wrote.
“Make everything public now.”
Musk replied that everything would be released, but even the ‘most important data was hidden (from [Dorsey] Also, some may have been removed.
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey (46), called for transparency after Musk announced that the second back of the Twitter Files would not be returned.
“If transparency is the goal to build trust, why not just let everyone see everything without filtering and let them judge for themselves?” Tweeted Dorsey
The delay came after the Tesla CEO fired James Baker – Twitter’s general counsel and former FBI general counsel – after discovering he vetted the first installment of the Files, which were sent to journalist Matt Taibbi, from Substack, and Common Sense Editor Bari Weiss.
Musk fired Baker “in view of concerns about Baker’s possible role in suppressing information important to the public dialog.”
Taibbi said that Baker was not aware of the new management’s involvement in the first file batch.
“The process of producing the “Twitter Files” involved the delivery of two journalists (Bari Weiss, me) via a lawyer close by new management. Taibbi posted on Twitter that things got more complicated after the initial batch.
“Over the weekend, as we both dealt with obstacles for new searches, it was @BariWeiss that discovered that the person responsible for releasing the files was someone called Jim. When she called to ask “Jim’s” last name, the reply was “Jim Baker.”
Weiss claimed that her jaw hit the floor when she discovered.
The first batch of files the two journalists received was titled the Spectra Baker Emails.
Twitter fired James Baker, the company’s general attorney, after he discovered that he had vetted and approved the first installment of Twitter Files.
Baker and other executives were seen discussing the October 2020 ban on Twitter’s news report about Hunter’s foreign deals. This was based on emails from Hunter’s laptop.
Taibbi published a batch of internal documents on Friday, naming them the ‘Twitter Files’. They included an exchange between Baker, and former VP for Global Comms Brandon Borrman.
Borrman asks about the ban on Hunter Biden’s article in Twitter’s hacked materials’ policy. ‘Can you truthfully claim this is part?
Baker replied, appearing to argue for the continuation of the ban because ‘caution’ is warranted.
The files were initially believed to have violated Twitter’s hacked material policy. However, Dorsey later admitted that the call was a mistake.
Critics accused Twitter, through the concealment of data, of tilting the presidential election in Biden’s favor.

Baker, Musk and the trial for the Democrat lawyer accused in lying to the FBI
James Baker has always been in the crosshairs Elon Musk’s sights, who became his boss on October 27, 2017.
Baker played a pivotal role in a series that saw Michael Sussmann, a Democrat attorney, go on trial for lying to FBI agents in May.
He He was not accused in any way of giving false information to the FBI. He was simply accused of lying about who he worked for.
Sussmann received information from a group data scientists. They looked at odd internet data and thought it might have indicated clandestine communications between servers for Trump Organization and Alfa Bank, a Kremlin-linked Russian financial bank.
Sussmann then emailed Baker, at that time the bureau’s general attorney, to tell him he had information the FBI needed to know.
‘I’m coming on my own — not on behalf of a client or company — want to help the bureau,’ Sussmann wrote in his text to Baker.
Baker testified that he was certain Sussmann was acting in an individual capacity and would not have met him if he were working for the Clinton campaign.
Sussmann was a cybersecurity specialist who had previously worked for the Democratic Party in relation to Russia’s hacking of its servers and Russia publishing emails from those servers.
Marc Elias, Sussmann’s partner at Perkins Coie was also connected to Democrats through Sussmann, who was representing Clinton and hired Fusion GPS.
Multiple witnesses, including Elias, testified that Sussmann did indeed act on his own initiative. They also argued that going to the FBI was not in Clinton’s best interests.
The FBI later ruled that the Russian bank and Trump campaign were not linked.
Musk claimed that Sussmann had ‘created a hoax’ about Russia during the trial, in an attempt to help Clinton.
Jim Jordan, a staunchly pro-Trump Congressman, tweeted on May 16: “Christopher Steele created this dossier.”
It was sold to the press by Glen Simpson.
‘Michael Sussman brought it to the FBI.
“And Democrats and the media lied about it all.
He tweeted, “All true,” on May 20.
“Bet most people don’t still know that a Clinton campaign lawyer used campaign funds to create an elaborate hoax regarding Trump and Russia.
“Makes you wonder what else could be fake.”
The jury ruled that Sussmann hadn’t lied to the FBI on May 31 and cleared him.
