Perth blogger Carolina McCauley has amassed 1 million followers with her home cleaning and tidying hacks, and shocked followers when she took over Instagram to reveal the hidden filthy spots that lurk in everyone’s home.

The mum of two showed how filthy your outlets, washing machine filter and extractor hood filter can get if they’re neglected – and claimed these should be cleaned every fortnight.

Carolina showed on Instagram how she cleaned the sink plug hole by covering it with baking soda, adding dish soap and using a scrubber to remove the buildup of grime.

She then turned to the filter above her stove and explained that you should clean it thoroughly every two weeks by soaking it in boiling water and dissolving several dishwasher tablets in the liquid until it is sparkling.

Finally, she drained old water from the washing machine filter into a pan, something she does every month.

Others, however, warned against loosening the plug, writing: ‘Unscrewing the plug hole this way will loosen the pipes underneath. You may eventually need a plumber to put everything back into place.

“Also use one or the other product, not two together, unless the packaging says they are compatible with each other and are intended to be used together.”
