The Aceh region of Western Indonesia is known as a conservative area and the only part of the country where Sharia law is used.
The lashes were held by the Lhokseumawe prosecutor at Tunas Bangsa Lhokseumawe Stadium after Friday’s prayer today.
The defendant was arrested on April 17 in a coffee shop in Banda Sakti district, Lhokseumawe.

Lhokseumawe City’s chief of public crimes, Muhammad Doni Sidik, said the suspect was originally sentenced to 20 lashes after a Sharia verdict on July 6.
However, the number of lashings was reduced by three to 17, because the man had been in prison for 98 days.
Every 30 days in prison means a reduction of one lashing in the last sentence.
Doni said the defendant was immediately transferred to the medical team after the scourging and then released.
The lashes were attended by a number of officials. Only a few members of the general public looked at the punishment.
In the Aceh region, criminal offenses that would lead to the implementation of Sharia include alcohol consumption, gambling, adultery and homosexuality.
Once one of the most powerful Muslim sultanates in Southeast Asia, the area had long used an informal type of Islamic law mixed with local laws known as ‘hukum adat’.
However, legislation was tightened when the long-running separatist conflict in Aceh ended in 2005. The laws have gradually expanded to more violations, most recently in 2014.
