Film director Shankar Shanmugham was seriously injured in a disaster that killed two other crew members.

The Indian filmmaker, 56, was reportedly injured when a crane crashed on the set of Indian 2, severely breaking his leg on Wednesday.

The tragedy has claimed the lives of Shankar’s personal assistant Madhu, 29, and assistant director Krishna, 34, according to Indian journalist Prashanth Rangaswamy.

Others on site have reportedly been taken to the hospital, although other crew members and cast members are believed to be safe.

Shankar, who is credited as S. Shankar, is one of the highest-paid Indian directors who works primarily in the Tamil cinema in the Kodambakkam district of Tamil Nadu, leading to the industry’s nickname Kollywood.

His latest project, Indian 2, is an emerging Indian Tamil language vigilant action thriller film and a sequel to the 1996 Indian film.

His film 2.0, released in 2018, is the fourth film with the highest win in India and the sixth film with the highest win worldwide.

His films Indian (1996) and Jeans (1998) were submitted by India for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

He shares a son and two daughters with his wife Easwari.
