Orcas are rare to see in Sydney. The last time these creatures were seen in the port city was in Botany Bay in 2018.

A pod of killer whales was recently spotted at Green Cape, near Merimbula on the New South Wales south coast in July.

The pod was first spotted in 2013, with up to 14 orcas.

That number has since been reduced to just three.

The creatures are typically found in Australian waters between June and October on the east coast.

The mammals are sighted between January and April on the west coast, but are typically seen year-round in the colder waters of Antarctica.

Orcas are the largest species of dolphin in the world and can weigh up to 5,500 kg and reach up to 9.8 metres in length.

The creatures are commonly known as orcas due to their size and predatory nature.
