This is the incredible moment a man climbed a 20ft lamppost in Glasgow city centre to rescue a stranded seagull before calmly sliding back down like a firefighter.

The bespectacled man was seen climbing the metal lamppost designed on Sauchiehall Street on Sunday evening after the Euro 2024 final.

Passersby stopped and watched in amazement as cries of “no way” could be heard as he quickly climbed to the top while the bird flapped its wings in its continued struggle to escape.

It then hooks its legs around one of the pole’s “branches”, which is designed to look like a tree, before gently lifting the gull up by the wing.

As it flies away, the small crowd below erupts in cheers and whistles as they applaud the hero who saved the seagull.

After giving a quick celebration with two fists raised, there is a brief moment where it is feared the man is stuck before he swings his legs back and slides safely down the pole to the ground.

Iain Dunlop, a part-time barman who runs a garden maintenance and tree surgery business, captured the footage outside the Box Bar, where he had been working on the doors that night.

Mr Dunlop posted the video on TikTok and the incredible effort was viewed more than a million times.

He told the BBC that the unsung hero who saved the bird was a customer at the bar.

Iain, owner of Total Treecall Scotland, said: ‘I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“The guy must have gone 20 feet into the air to rescue the seagull. However, he was up and down in the blink of an eye.

‘I was going to get my climbing gear from the car, but before I could do so, he got up, climbed down and released the bird.

‘It took less than two minutes to get up and down. The seagull seemed to be in its prime and the customer re-entered the bar.’
