The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which opened in the US in 1988, became a sensation with its 1986 London debut, starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman.
Over a year later it was transferred to Broadway where it has been playing ever since and is said to have grossed over $1 billion in ticket sales.
“Over the years, the number of good weeks at the box office has started to shrink,” producer Cameron Mackintosh told Variety.
He added, “In some really bad weeks, we’ve lost a lot of money, especially in New York.”
The pandemic is also said to have put increasing financial pressure on supply, as Mackintosh admitted: “Margins have shrunk dramatically”.
But the theater manager believes the show will make a comeback in the US, where Phantom has been playing to packed houses since September’s announcement it would close on Broadway.
New York’s Majestic Theater, where the show appears, will be renovated after years of continuous performances.
The London show has been relaunched with a smaller orchestra and other design tweaks in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is currently playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
