In Gaza, the remnants of the recent war with Israel were displayed, and murals painted by artists on the rubble of destroyed homes

Date:

The recent confrontations were the most violent between Gaza and Israel since August 2022, which lasted for five days and resulted in 35 deaths, most of them Palestinians, before the two sides reached an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement.

Palestinians see murals painted on the rubble of homes destroyed by Israeli air strikes in May 2023 in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, as part of a mixed art exhibition titled “Occupation Kills Childhood.”

According to Palestinian media, this exhibition was launched, with the participation of popular and official crowds, on Thursday.

It includes various artistic and cultural items, in addition to displaying the belongings of children who were killed during the recent confrontation between Israel and Palestinian factions, and the remnants of weapons belonging to the Israeli army.

Iyad Abu Obeid, 40-year-old owner of a damaged house, confirms that “the drawings depict the actual scene of what happened.. However, they may not fully reflect the feelings of panic and fear felt by the residents of these houses.”

Regarding the purpose of this work, Muhammad Thuraya, a member of the exhibition organizing committee, says, “We came to embody this artwork in an artistic and simple way that is entrenched in the minds of children, recording their wounds and hopes for the future.”

Palestinian photographer Attia Darwish posted a group of photos on Facebook showing children standing next to these murals to take pictures.

The media coordinator of the event, Fidaa Younes, had published a post on Facebook announcing that the preparations were continuing, and that the exhibition would be launched Thursday at 5:00 pm in Deir Al-Balah, behind Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, and would include various artistic and cultural activities.

The recent confrontations were the most violent between Gaza and Israel since August 2022, which lasted for five days and resulted in 35 deaths, most of them Palestinians, before the two sides reached an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement.

It began on Tuesday with air strikes that killed three military commanders in the Islamic Jihad movement, which Israel, the European Union, the United States and the European Union classify as a “terrorist organization”.

The Gaza Strip, a narrow area in which 2.3 million Palestinians live, who suffer from poverty and unemployment, has witnessed a number of wars with Israel since 2008.
