alert: We note the presence of spoilers for the second episode of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc during this report..
Episode 2 sees Tanjirou discover the “secret weapon” hidden in Swordsmith Village, upon arriving at the Yoriichi Type Zero combat training dummy. It was built during the Sengoku period by Kotetsu’s ancestor, an orphaned young swordsmith, whom Tanjiro befriended after trying to protect him from Moichiro.
As a token of gratitude, Kotetsu allows Tanjirou to train with Yoriichi, but his methods are inhuman and cruel, as he allows Tanjirou to go several days of training without food or even water.
In Demon Slayer Episode 2, Tanjiro obtains a new power in a cruel way
One day, after losing consciousness due to exhaustion, Tanjiro feels his spirit cross the Sanzu River, which in Japanese Buddhist traditions is considered the border of the land of the dead. In the dream, Tanjiro falls into the river and finds a hidden treasure at the bottom. When he awakens, he is suddenly able to use his exceptional sense of smell to predict his opponent’s attacks.
This ability is called Pseudo-Precognition, and it allows Tanjiro to anticipate up to six moves before they happen, giving him a reaction similar to that of the Hashira who are the strongest fighters of the Demon Slayer Corps.
His newfound sense of smell enabled Tanjirou to acquire a very useful skill called “Opening Thread”. It allows him to perceive a quick time-stop within the enemy’s movement as this gives him a gap through which he can deliver a crushing blow.
To acquire this skill, Tanjiro had to train for six months on Mount Sagiri under the guidance of former water hashira Sakonji Urukodaki. However, he learned this new move much faster than expected due to Kotetsu’s lack of experience as a coach, which made him push Tanjirou very hard, even bringing him to the brink of death.
However, had it not been for this near-death experience, Tanjiro would never have obtained this superpower, which will be of great help to him in his upcoming battles.
What makes Demon Slayer so exciting is that its main characters evolve and become stronger through the repeated battles and grueling training they go through each time. However, the story and the sequence of events also have a role to play in arousing the enthusiasm of fans of the series and the characters.
