  • Animal broke the internet when live cam in its habitat took off on YouTube
  • The most recent veterinary exam in April found that her arthritis had accelerated
  • Veterinarians decided that euthanasia was the humane and appropriate course of action
  • April’s Giraffe Camera was the second most live viewed channel in YouTube history at the time, with over 232 million live views from February to May 2017
  • More than 1.2 million viewers watched as April gave birth to the calf Tajiri

April, the giraffe who became a sensation when a rural New York zoo livestreamed her pregnancy and delivery in 2017, was euthanized Friday due to progressive arthritis, the zoo said.

“She’s a dear member of our family, and while we knew this day would eventually come, our hearts ache,” Jordan Patch, owner of Animal Adventure Park, said in a statement.

The 20-year-old giraffe started showing signs of mobility problems last summer, and veterinary imaging showed she had arthritis in her feet and problems in her left rear leg, the zoo’s vets said in a statement.

Park officials said April 20 was euthanized “because of her worsening arthritis.”

They noted that animals the size of giraffes can quickly deteriorate from arthritis.

They said they used joint supplements, pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, padded floors, diet changes and trimming April’s hooves to slow the progression of the disease, but her mobility continued to decline and she began to spend much more time lying down.

Imaging in March showed “significant and progressive degeneration” of joints in her lower leg, the vets said.

“The seriousness of her condition exceeds our ability to control April’s comfort,” they said.

Statistics on giraffe life expectancy vary. A zoo giraffe in Knoxville, Tennessee said to be the oldest in the country was euthanized in 2019 at the age of 31.

April drew huge online audiences when she gave birth to her fourth calf in 2017 at the private zoo in Harpursville, a village about 130 miles northwest of New York City.

The giraffe camera became the second most watched live stream in YouTube history, at least at the time, with over 232 million views and 7.6 billion minutes of live viewing time over several months.

At least 1.2 million people watched as the male calf, eventually called Tajiri, was born – appropriately enough – in the month of April.

An online fundraiser raised more than $ 150,000 for the care of April, her mate and the calf.

Other ventures – including Toys `R´ Us sponsorship of the YouTube stream, monetization text messages and a clothing line – also brought money to the zoo.

The owners said it would be used for zoo maintenance, wildlife conservation in Africa, and local children with unexpected medical costs.

“April’s impact on animal conservation and appreciation is both immeasurable and lasting,” Patch said Friday.

April gave birth to another calf, Azizi, in March 2019, with more than 300,000 people watching live on YouTube. He died in a Texas zoo last October.

Animal Adventure Park said she was given contraceptives to retire after he was born.
