The European Union has introduced new rules for Australian travellers, including a new $11.50 application fee

Australians planning a trip to Europe in 2025 face new rules ahead of their visit.

Previously, Australians could travel visa-free to this continent rich in history and culture, but that is no longer the case.

The European Union has introduced a new entry system for Australian travellers, which includes a new application fee of $11.50.

This is all part of the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) program, which is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt citizens of 60 nations, including Australians.

The programme starts in the first half of 2025.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is an ETIAS?

It is a new travel authorisation requirement for all Australians travelling to 30 countries in Europe.

The participating countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

What does it bring you?

With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, you can enter the territory of these European countries as frequently as you like for short-term stays, typically up to 90 days in any 180-day period, the EU states on its website.

‘However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask you to show your passport and other documents and check that you meet the entry conditions.’

How does it work?

The ETIAS is linked to your passport.

It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

If you get a new passport, you will need to obtain a new ETIAS travel authorization.

How can I apply?

Go to the ETIAS website and complete the online application form, or apply via the ETIAS mobile app.

The cost is seven euros, which is approximately equivalent to 11.50 dollars.

Processing times

Most applications are processed within minutes, the EU says.

‘It is possible, however, that your application may take longer to process.

‘If so, you will receive a decision within four days.

‘Please note that this period may be extended up to 14 days if you are asked to provide additional information or documentation, or up to 30 days if you are invited to an interview.’

After application

“You will receive an email confirming the submission of your application which will include your unique ETIAS application number – please make sure to retain this number for future reference,” the EU says.

‘Once your application has been processed, you will receive another email informing you of your outcome.

‘When you receive your ETIAS travel authorization, make sure your name, passport number and other information are correct: if there are any errors, you will not be allowed to cross the border.’

The ETIAS is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

What’s happening at the border?

The ETIAS is linked to your travel document.

“Make sure you bring the same document you used for your ETIAS application,” the EU says.

‘Otherwise, you will not be allowed to board your flight, bus or boat, or enter any of the European countries that require ETIAS.’
