An American woman living in Britain has revealed the “mortifying” mistake she made when visiting a coffee shop.

In a post on her TikTok account, Kristen Howell revealed the embarrassing mistake she made while attending a study group session during her time in college, when someone asked her to “borrow a condom.”

While asking for a condom during a study session at university doesn’t seem out of the ordinary to Brits, the same can’t be said for Americans, who use the word as a slang term to refer to condoms.

Kristen said: ‘This girl came up to me and asked if I could borrow a condom. At first I was like, ‘You know what, just get it, girl. It’s 10am in a coffee shop, not really my style, but here you go. ‘ And I gave her one.

‘It wasn’t until a few weeks later, when I was talking to someone completely different, that I learned that in the UK, a rubber means eraser, not condom.

‘I gave this girl what I thought was an eraser, which was a condom, and this girl had only asked me for an eraser.’

Another dramatic turn of events came when the girl Kirsten handed the condom to didn’t even ask why she did it, but instead proceeded to take it and walk away explaining why.

Reacting to the story in the comments, other users were moved by Kristen’s unfortunate incident and posted: “I held my breath waiting to laugh.”
