An American man visiting Wales was left stunned after initially calling Welsh cakes “rubbish”.

Kalani Smith, known as @kalanighosthunter on TikTok, He has almost three million followers and has been trying out some of Britain’s most iconic dishes, since Cadbury Custard eggs for cake and mash.

In a video with more than 413,900 views, the man from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, decided to try the humble Welsh sweet after dropping the bombshell that the one he tried in Morrisons was awful.

Venturing into Cardiff’s historic market, the content creator had high hopes for the snack and joked that they smelled “heavenly” as he approached the stall.

Chatting to a Cardiff Bakestones worker, the American was left baffled by the different flavours of the biscuit-like product traditionally made from sultanas or raisins.

Nodding around at the array of golden baked goods, Kalani chose a traditional Welsh cake, one with chocolate chips and another with jam and cream.

Getting to the heart of his review for his 3 million followers, he joked: “Well then they hooked us up with some fresh Welsh cakes that are warm.”

Initially tempted to cheat on her taste test and go straight for the Welsh chocolate chip cake, Kalani nibbled on the traditionally flavored baked good instead.

Referring to his first – and negative – Morrisons Welsh cake, the TikToker added: ‘It (the Welsh cake) is so much better.

“I think this would be really good with a cup of tea or a glass of milk, but it’s warm, almost like a pancake – it’s a delicious 9.4 for fresh Welsh cake.”

Next came the chocolate chip cake, which Kalani suspected she would like best because of her love of chocolate.

“Oh my God. This is heavenly,” she murmured as she took the first bite, before adding, “It’s like a chocolate chip pancake in your hand, but fluffier. That’s a ten.”

Lastly, the content creator tried the Welsh cake filled with jam and cream, which he compared to a ‘scone’.

When ranking their favourite of the three, the chocolate chip came first, then the jam and scone flavoured sweet and lastly the traditional Welsh cake.

“My favorite is probably the second course with chocolate chips, jam and cream, and the traditional one as a third,” she said.

‘Just because I like something a little more sweater-y and reminds me of a pancake but with chocolate chips it’s heavenly.’

The Welsh flooded the comments, delighted to witness the American devouring such a sweet treat.

One encouraged him to venture to Swansea to try Joe’s ice cream, while another urged him to try bara brith, another traditional Welsh buttery dessert.
