It should probably happen more often than it does now… but there are occasions when you put that cork back in the bottle at the end of an evening.
But stop! Whether you return a cork, twist a lid on, or use that fancy clip-on bottle cap you picked up on that fancy vineyard tour, your wine will still be undrinkable in a few days.
Now a sommelier has revealed the clever trick she “swears by” to keep her wine tasting fresh longer once the bottle has been opened.
A wine expert has taken to TikTok to show people how to make sure an opened bottle of wine stays fresh longer and doesn’t waste a drop
Minor exposure to oxygen can lead to deeper, more complex flavors that can even improve the quality of wines. But too much exposure has the opposite effect
In sharing her advice to the world, Warner, who is known as @confidentuncorked, told her followers that while this may “sound crazy,” you should never “put the cork back in the bottle.”
No matter how much wine is left in the bottle, it is never a good idea to close the cap again.
Instead, she said she has a “much better tip” that is both life-changing and mind-blowing.
The wine educator explained: ‘If you put the cork back on a bottle of wine that is half empty, you will see that there is still half of the oxygen in it.’
While showing her followers her bottle, she went on to explain, “Corks are porous.
“This still allows oxygen to get into your wine — not great.”
She advised people to “reduce the ratio of oxygen to wine” instead.
Minor exposure to oxygen can lead to deeper, more complex flavors that can even improve the quality of wines.
But too much exposure has the opposite effect: It destroys those complex tastes, flavors and even colors. This is when wine is considered oxidized.
The TikToker continued to say that to avoid this and thus save your wine, she recommends a Mason jar.
The wine expert added that, of course, you can decant your wine into different sized Mason jars depending on how much you have left
While many TikTok users were shocked at the prospect of people being left with wine, others were excited about the hack
To demonstrate how it works, she said, “Just take whatever wine you have left over and pour it into the Mason jar or other airtight container.”
She urged her followers to seal it properly and securely to prevent oxygen from entering.
When she revealed why this method is better than putting the cork back on, she said it has “so much less oxygen in it.” [the jar]then in the rest of the bottle.’
She added, “I hereby swear your wine will taste fresh even a few days after you open it.
“While a day after I open a bottle of wine and put the cork back on, I can tell the difference.”
The wine expert added that, of course, you can decant your wine into a different size Mason jar depending on how much you have left.
In a separate comment, she said you could make your wine last “a week, maybe more” by following this method.
While many TikTok users were shocked at the prospect of people being left with wine, others were excited about the hack.
One person wrote, “Just tried this and highly recommend it. I will do this from now on. Thanks for the great content.’
And a second: “If I ever have any leftover wine, I’ll try that.” It hasn’t happened yet, but who knows.’
Another TikTok user said, “I just learned this! Good advice!!!’
While other people joked, “Left wine? Never heard of it..’
And a second said, ‘Left wine. I’ve read about it but never experienced it. I thought it was an urban myth!’
And a third comedian said, “I believe in the tooth fairy for the leftover wine.”
